Pretty gypsy caravans have been travelling through our little valley all week.
They're on their way to the annual Appleby horse fair in Cumbria.

I do enjoy seeing them but they do slow the traffic up quite a bit as there are only 2 short stretches of road in the whole 17 miles beetween us and the next town, where it is possible to overtake safely. (It's a very bendy and winding road, bikers love it.) If we remember we try and use a back road to avoid them on our return journey.

And this is where we were returning from,
.
Pretty eh?

Aaaah thats better, no sneaky dog or wonderful man blocking my shot.

I had to snap this one.

NO PARKING ON THE GREEN!

Stitchy stuff next time, I promise.

love Fi x

Fiona, thanks for the great photographs.
I've never seen a gypsy caravan, however, my husband tells me when he was a child he remembers gypsy would come by their farm and ask permission to camp overnight.
Thanks for this insight into a different life style in the modern day.
hugs

Gypsy caravans are unknown here. I think gypsies in the U.S. are now mainly urban. What a color way to live. The parking on the green was a hoot, too.

Had to laugh at the last pic Fi.

Is that "no, no, no, parking on the green?' or 'no parking on the green?' hehehe

How wonderful to see those wagons passing by, very colourful. but 'twould be frustrating getting stuck behind them on the road.

Once again beautiful pics.

I love those caravans they have facinated me sice I was little. I might be going to Appleby on Sunday but the crowds put me off a bit!
I have a friend who stays in West Burton regularly as she uses it as a meeting place with her sister who lives in Doncaster. They walk the legs off their little dogs. So now I can relate to where she is talking about. Thanks H x

Love the picture of the trailers how utterly romantic to live in one of those. Would love to go to Appleby but the hubby won't, maybe one day...Lucey x

I have very fond memories of the Appleby Horse Fair. A long time ago... It's nice to see it still carries on.

What gorgeous caravans. Hard to believe that some folk still live in those isn't it?

Love your stitchy stuff but also really love these posts too - you live in such a fabulous part of the country. I'd love one of those gypsy caravans wouldn't you? The parking on the green pic was great!

Great pics - always makes me want to come back up there. Shropshire and the Welsh Marches are beautiful but Yorkshire still has a strong pull on my heart strings.

Yes Fiona, half of me enjoys this annual trek of caravans - they are picturesque - but as someone pointed out on my blog - we wonder how the horses manage such a long trek. But they do all look well looked-after don't they.

Aw, what lovely pictures, so peaceful and tranquil. The caravans are so beautiful. I know they slow the traffic, but they seem to represent such a fascinating way of life.
