This little lonesome piccy is all have to show you of my 20 minutes since last time we met. Don't get me wrong, I haven't missed a day yet and this little bit of freehand machine embroidery has lead to greater things. Things that will have to wait for another day.
.
Today I want to show you something that not many people see. Well not people with any sense, that is. The only normal people who see this are our wonderful gritter/snow plough drivers here in the Dales. These fantastic men have kept our lifeline, our main road through the Dale open through out our snowy weather, and we have had a lot of snow here. It started to snow on the 17th Dec and began to melt on the 16th Jan and according to the BBC we've had 16 inches.
So take a look at these photos (not taken by me, I hasten to add!)
As a comparison this is the Buttertubs Pass in good weather.

The Buttertubs Pass is the road that travels over the Fell tops from Wensleydale to Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. So named because farmers in years gone by travelling the road to market would stop to rest and lower their fresh butter down into the huge limestone holes to keep it cool. If you would like a virtual ride over the Buttertubs, there are lots of video journeys on You Tube, this one is Jeremy Clarksons, (One his all time favourite roads.) I especially liked the bit about the piece of hosepipe!

Now this is the Buttertubs Pass about a week ago with a little snow!

Wow that is some serious amount of snow going on there. Both Twiglet and I have also kept up our 20 Minuters and have had so many positive comments that yesterday we launched our blog shop. Please call in and check it out and we would really appreciate any feedback/comments

Brrr! You can have that. Thanks so much for sharing about Buttertubs pass. We are bringing our old bike and sidecar to the UK for a couple of months in 2011. Buttertubs has now been jotted down on a "Must Do" list. Last time we took a bike over, we rode Hartside Pass near Penrith, which was fun.
I'm enjoying seeing your progress with your 20 minutes each day. I'm trying to do a little each day, but often it is less than 20 mins.
My goodness that is incredible - and I thought we had it bad! Mind you our roads aren't cleared ;-)
Crikey, I can't believe there was that much snow, Fi! Stop teasing us with the freehand embroidery project, you bad girl!
Hen x
More than happy to hear about and see pics of snow, it takes my mind off the 30deg plus and 80% humidity here. Love seeing your 20 minute a day progress.
Good lord, you weren't kidding when you said you had a LOT of snow. Thats scary!
Wow thats a lot of snow !! Here in Northern Ireland we had a "sensible" amount of snow and I was glad to see the back of it! Still keeping up my 20 minutes. :)
We didn't have that amount of snow, but I actually do remember the winter of 62/63 I was seven! I do like your freehand embroidery. I would like to try it sometime, never had the courage to make my machine do "freehand". I also have done my twenty minutes each day, but I have to confess it is actually two hours every evening while watching TV hope that isn't classed as cheating.......?
Oh yeah... now thats what I call snow! where are my skis? I am moving to the Buttertubs!

Thank you for the instructions, I'll give them a go later today (got homework first..eek.. homework at 38 lol)
I also wanted to mention, and I don't know if it is just me, but I couldn't get your e-mail link to work yesterday, could be a bug.
Nice work by the, and fantastic pictures of the landscape, we forget how beautiful our country can be.
Oh that is a lot of snow.
Wow you did get some snow..I sure do like the first picture much better,,well I am hoping it stays away for awhile now..
I love the embroidery, and wow that is a lot of snow. Glad you don't have to brave that road. I'm really enjoying my 20 minutes, I just posted my latest project. Thanks for the challenge, I am finally getting lots of little things done.
i thought we had a lot but no where near as much as you!!! Still doing at least 20 mins per day - seem to be still hooked on the crochet at the mo!!!

Yes Fiona, crossing Buttertubs in Winter really sorts the men from the boys, doesn't it. My friends who farm near to you often in Winter have to go round by Leyburn to feed their sheep just the other side of Buttertubs as the road becomes impassable if there is even the lightest breeze.
Unbelievable amounts of snow! Great photos - thanks for sharing. We had snow piled that high during the big snow of 1978 in Chicago Illinois. It brings back memories to me.

Count me in for 20 minutes of crafting a day. Have decided that 2010 is the year I learn to knit - am doing squares for a blanket. So far so good :)

Oh happy memories of Buttertubs! Never been up there in the snow. We have had more snow here but its that horrid slushy stuff and hopefully will be gone by tomorrow.

Off to read some of your past posts..
Would love to join the 20 minutes gang, please.
